Back in 1989, on the initiative of turkish and tatar community leaders, the Muslim Turkish Democratic Union of Romania was founded. Later, on 1st of February 1990, it was decided to separate the two ethnics, thus forming Union of Turkish Ethnic Minority in Romania, which gained legal status on December 21 1993, titled Turkish Democratic Union in Romania.
The core aim of this union is to express, protect, and promote the ethnical, cultural, linguistic, and religious identity of its members.
